The medical field is usually very serious in nature. That is unless you’re talking about the Minnesota parody group The Laryngospasms, of course!

During work hours, all members of the musical ensemble are Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. But in their free time, they have people cracking up over their hilarious songs – which pertain to their area of expertise.

The word “laryngospasm” itself is a medical term.

On the Mayo Clinic website they explain:

“Laryngospasm (luh-RING-go-spaz-um) is a spasm of the vocal cords that temporarily makes it difficult to speak or breathe.”

Fortunately, there isn’t anything frightening about The Laryngospasms singing group! They’re all about blending comedy and music.

The Laryngospasms quartet first formed in 1990, back when the original members were in anesthesia school.

It started with the old classic “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” by Neil Sedaka. Only they created a parody version that’s very-fittingly called “Waking Up Is Hard To Do.” Think Weird Al Yankovic’s style, only in the medical field!

While The Laryngospasms’ group members have changed throughout the years – it’s a song that’s remained one of their staples. According to Anesthesia Tools, the ensemble became a hit at medical events and they eventually recorded a couple of albums.

The Laryngospasms filmed a video for their comical song “Waking Up Is Hard To Do.”

It features the vocalists dressed in their scrubs and in the operating room. While you’ll recognize the doo-wop tune, they’re certainly not the same lyrics you grew up listening to!

Get ready to snap along as they sing, “Patient’s going down, do-be-do down, down…”

It’s hard not to crack a smile at the lyrics.

Anesthesia and being in the operating room is something these guys know all about. While surgery is no laughing matter, their creative take is. They sing lines like, “Don’t take my tube away from me … Take it out and I’ll turn blue – ’cause waking up is hard to do.”

The video is as fun to watch as it is to listen to.

All of the vocalists keep happy grins on their faces as they sing, which adds to the hilarity of it all. Especially with lines like, “I am in such misery” and “If I wake, I’m going sue.” These guys are seriously really good at staying in character!

But do they have any talent?

Oh yes, they do. It’s hard to believe they have jobs in the medical industry – just with their ability to sing so beautifully together. It would be enjoyable to listen to their voices even without the brilliant lyrics.
