America’s Got Talent has seen all kinds of incredible performances over the years.
For the most part, people tend to associate winning acts on this show with incredible singers.
Occasionally, other performers find a way to break through with unusual talents as well—for example, an edgy mime performance or an unusual comedy routine. Beyond that, it seems that excellent dance performances also do quite well on the show because they are emotional, dynamic and fun for the audience to watch.
Still, the show doesn’t often see a performance like the one we have today.
The audition we’re talking about came from the show’s 2019 season.
As the clip begins, a couple walks out on stage and introduces themselves to the judges as Duo MainTenanT, a dance duo originally from France.
After judge Julianne Hough asks them exactly what their relationship is, they say they are “everything”—friends, performing partners and lovers! Needless to say, that kind of intimacy and close bond is bound to lead to good things when it comes to performing.
Before long, the judges clear the way for them to share their talents with the world.
After that, something unusual happens—the man in the duo takes his shirt off!
Next, his partner lays on the floor and nobody is sure what to expect. As the music comes up, the man walks over to his partner and scoops her up off the floor.
After a moment, she strikes a pose and does an incredible back spring over his shoulders and into his arms—and the crowd goes crazy. From there, their dance only gets more and more impressive.
These two are so incredibly acrobatic and strong that Hough actually stands up in her seat.
They say that the purpose of a great dance performance is to tell a story through movement—and these two definitely accomplish that.
As the dance goes on, they do all kinds of incredible dips, drops and stunts. The man lifts his partner above his head while she does the splits and handstands.
There are too many incredible moves to list them all… but the audience loves every single one of them. When it’s all over, everyone gets on their feet to give them a huge round of applause.
Although everyone in the crowd clearly loved the show, nobody seemed to love it more than Hough did!
When it’s finally over, Hough says that they were “by far the best acrobatic act” that the show had ever seen!
For his part, Simon Cowell says that the performance was actually perfection and that it reminded him of competition and one-ups-manship of Olympic performers. After that, the woman explains that she actually was an Olympic athlete… and Cowell is simply speechless.
Across the board, all the judges give them a resounding yes.
Aside from how they did on the show, this performance really exemplifies what a great dance performance can do.
Although the habit on these shows is sometimes to only do flashy moves or have a ton of attitude, these two showed plenty of restraint while still doing some impressive things—and the final result was sensual, scary, dramatic and very impressive.
