It’s hard to believe that “Uptown Girl” was released 38 years ago already. Now at 71, Billy Joel is still a musician through and though. He’s just got his own set of mini-musicians to look after now.
And if that doesn’t make you feel old yet, wait till you learn that his eldest daughter, Alexa Ray Joel is 35.
His 2nd youngest is 3-year old Della Rose Joel. She has his musician blood for sure, she just doesn’t know it yet. Or cares.
She stole the show at a concert of his back in December 19th of 2018. The crowd came here to see Billy Joel, and they got a bonus show too. Along with him was Della Rose, and she had no sign of stage fright at all despite being 3.
In fact, she seemed rather enthusiastic walking onto the stage.
Though behind that confident smirk that reads like “I’m ready for this”, it seems like Della Rose wasn’t really ready – or motivated, I should say.
Maybe if her dad pumps her up a bit, that might convince her to sing? Surely no one can resist singing along when Billy Joel is playing, not even his daughter I dare say.
Her father wants to do “Don’t Ask Me Why”. So he get some music going from his band, and the crowd chimes in to cheer her on too.
And yet, Della Rose is as silent as ever.
Though she isn’t shy-looking. Despite her silence, she doesn’t look all too intimidated by the crowd. She’s probably used to big crowds now, since this is daddy’s day job. A big crowd is about as interesting to her as an office full of employees and interns.
She at least starts tapping her foot to her papa’s music. That’s the spirit!
Billy, on the other hand, is having some trouble keeping a straight face. Singing while playing the piano is hard enough as is.
Outside of this one performance (..or lack thereof), Della Rose isn’t one to always shy away from singing. She sung Happy Birthday to her older sister, Alexa Ray, once. See? Maybe she just wasn’t feeling it.
That, or her sister is the only one she finds worthy of hearing her sing. Alexa Ray Joel is an accomplished singer herself, thanks to her musical upbringing from her dad. Who’s to say Della Rose can’t do the same?
She’s certainly got the foot-tapping skills needed. Look at her go. 3 whole minutes of focused foot-tapping, without a single change of expression on her face.
If she learns the drums, she’ll be unstoppable.
And when all of it is over, she takes in the applause and hands the mic back to her dad. Performing can be tiring, after all.
It’s no easy task to raise several daughters when touring the world as a musician is your day job. When you’ve written and performed hit songs for nearly 40 years, it’s only natural to settle down a bit and start a family.
