Nowadays, only a handful of people in the world try to learn how to play harp.
However, with virtuosos around the world keeping this instrument alive, it will surely go on for more generations to come.
Harps definitely sound beautiful when it comes to the melodies.
Still, there are a lot of reasons why this piece of instrument is losing ground. First, these stringed instruments date way back as early as 3000 BC, which means harps belong to the ancient times when it comes to stringed instruments. Secondly, modern harps are expensive compared to other stringed instruments like the guitar.
Aside from that, its bulky structure is a hassle because it takes up so much space.
Only a few truly dedicated people can take their time to learn how to play this majestic instrument.
Still, if you’re looking for some harpists to listen to, Camille and Kennerly are a great place to start!
Instead of learning how to play one, why not leave it to the professionals?
Camille and Kennerly Kitt are identical twins from America who share a passion for the harp. They are known as The Harp Twins, and they’ve already released over a hundred singles and six albums. The Harp Twins perform a variety of genres from metal, rock, classical and even movie and video game soundtracks.
Here is one of their performances that will definitely blow your mind.
In August 2015, The Harp Twins released a video on YouTube of them performing a song from the popular heavy metal rock band, Metallica. The song was called “One,” and it appeared on Metallica’s fourth studio album, Justice For All. What is more amazing about this performance is that the twins meant to play this song on only one pedal harp as an homage to the song title.
The twins played the harp with their fingers and produced a wonderful melody.
Kennerly had to learn how to play the harp backwards to assist her twin sister on the melodies.
You could also see her standing up on one leg as she used her other foot to kick the harp’s soundboard to add percussion. Meanwhile, Camille was in charge of changing the pitches of the strings for every part of the song using the pedals.
She also helps Kennerly for the percussions by using her hand to tap on the wood.
For six minutes, both of them played a soothing and bewitching version of Metallica’s One with Kennerly playing and balancing on one foot at the same time, while Camille had to time her pitch changes perfectly as they played through the song.
The twins’ dedication to learning this song paid off as they perfectly nailed this cover.
Since the song was one of the top requests from their fans, they decided to take it up to another level by mixing in several different elements on a single harp.
To make it a successful cover, they had to make sure to include every important detail and musical element—the same way that Metallica plays it.
To do that, they first had to learn how to do percussion while plucking the strings with their fingers. They really showed us how versatile of an instrument the harp can be!
