There have been all kinds of talented performers on Carpool Karaoke over the years.
Though anyone with cable or internet access probably knows what we’re talking about already, Carpool Karaoke is a segment on James Corden’s Late Late Show where Corden picks up a celebrity performer and drives around the city with them.
While they’re in the car, they generally listen to the performer’s music and sing along to it—though there are usually additional twists and emotional moments thrown in as well.
While a lot of the artists that come on are new pop artists, our personal favorites are the older artists.
One great example is a Carpool Karaoke episode that featured Elton John.
Though John has been back in the news recently due to the success of his biopic Rocketman, he has plenty of success under his belt already! Beyond being knighted by the Queen, John has also won five Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Tony award. He has also released nearly more albums than we can count, with plenty of world-class songs to go right along with them.
Needless to say, he was a great candidate for Corden’s show—and the two had an absolute blast together.
As one might expect, the car ride started off with a fun and goofy performance of “Your Song.”
Before they’re even a full verse in, Corden stops with a big smile on his face. “This is so much fun!” he says, clearly a huge fan of John. After singing for a moment, he asks John about the origin of the song and if he knew immediately that it would be a big hit.
As he explains, John says that combined with the lyrics of his long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin, the two knew right away that they had taken a huge leap forward.
After that, it’s time for the next song—and before long, the two are dancing in their chairs.
Late in the session, John and Corden start singing “Tiny Dancer.”
As John explains though, he never wakes up in the morning and thinks that he’s completely made it. At this, Corden can’t believe what he’s hearing. Still, John insists that he still has the energy of a 20-year-old and that he is constantly inspired by new artists who are raising the bar for him and his colleagues. Before long, the two are dressed up as lions as they sing along to the Lion King soundtrack.
Although all the songs are great, this one is probably the most hilarious of them all.
Towards the very end of the video, John and Corden sing along to “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.”
Before that, though, he explains to Corden that having children has been a life-changing part of his life. In fitting with the rest of their conversation, John explains that his children have taught him so much and have even given him a whole new lease on life.
Even though he’s an older father, he learned that he could still find new experiences, still find new ways to be grateful and still learn any kind of new skill. As he says himself: “You’re never too old to do anything!” Needless to say, this is one of the most inspiring and heartwarming editions of Carpool Karaoke we’ve ever seen.
Special thanks to Elton John and James Corden for this awesome performance! Watch the full clip below:
