When the Covid-19 pandemic started and people around the world one country, one continent at a time, started being asked to stay at home in quarantine, there was not much one could do.

We couldn’t go outside, we couldn’t go to work, we could hardly go to the supermarket or go for a quick walk- when that was allowed, depending on the country each one lives in.

Most people during that time turned to social media. We started having regular chats with friends we couldn’t meet up with in person, we worked from home, and we entertained ourselves- again- through the internet.

Some people decided at the time to do their best to make others smile during those hard times. Depending on their talent, people found ways to express what they were going through and how they were feeling in humorous ways.

This is what Shirley Șerban from New Zealand did, too.

Shirley has always liked creating songs to make herself and others around her smile, so, when the dark times came, she decided to use this talent to make YouTube users smile, as well.

“With the onset of Covid-19, I have been creating and sharing ‘relyriced’ classic songs, as well as a few originals about current events to help keep myself happy – and I’ve found that others enjoy them too,” she explains. “Yes, the pandemic is serious, but yes, we can all do with a bit more joy.”

Shirley started creating those videos in March 2020 and she has not stopped since. She has more than 100k subscribers today, and her videos have been viewed more than 35 million times.

One of her recent “relyriced” songs is “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler.

The original song, which was released back in 1983, is a love song. In fact, it’s a dark love song, which was initially entitled “Vampires in Love”.

Shirley took the song and made it hers. She changed all the lyrics so that it turned into a “song of the old”. A song dedicated to what comes with getting old.

And it definitely does not disappoint. It will truly make you laugh once you listen to it.

Let’s take a closer look at what it tackles.

Well, the protagonist’s main issue seems to be that she’s “slowing down”. When she was younger, she used to be full of energy, and now she often feels tired.

Another problem is that she can’t see without using her glasses, while she doesn’t feel as strong anymore as she used to be.

As she explains, some bread or French fries are now enough to make her feel “gasified”, and all she wishes for is “stable blood pressure”, good eyesight, and smoother skin.

As the song is approaching the end, she wishes she could sleep through the night, and she admits that she pees “just a bit” when she laughs, and that she can’t “commit to a fart” anymore!
