It wasn’t what I expected, but even better. They made my day.

When this festive time rolls around once again we’re reminded of some of the staples of the season. Some staples include ugly sweaters, eggnog and nutcrackers. Nutcrackers however, are not a globally known phenomenon. So what is a nutcracker?

Well, when we think of “The Nutcracker” we may think of a few things:

1. A small ornate wooden tool for opening walnut shells.

These are a mainstay of Christmas decorations. No festive living room is complete without these dead-eyed chompers on every visible surface. They look a little bit creepy, and the idea of a soldier using his teeth to crush walnut shells sends a shiver down the spines of anyone who’s ever paid for dental work.

2. A popular yule-tide ballet dance

Ah, this is a classic ballet, and a must-see around Christmas time. It’s a great show to take children to see to get them into the Christmas spirit and listen to the classic tune by the name “The Nutcracker”. Just be ready to see some TIGHT tights…

3. A self-defense move (frowned upon in formal martial arts)

Ouch. Yeah, let’s move away from that one…

But we can throw away our dead-eyed wooden nutcrackers, because there’s a new favorite nutcracker in town!

Specifically, this modern rendition of “The Nutcracker” dance done by Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer, JR Tight Eyex and James Derrick who I presume is still working on a nickname. Along with the California Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s popping, it’s locking, it’s utterly shocking the way these guys move so precisely in time!

They all start off side by side frozen in the position of a wooden nutcracker…

But then they bust out the moves and oh boy, are they incredible!

They mimic the mechanical puppet-like movements of a real nutcracker, almost like the classic “robot” dance style. The combination of classic ballet song and hip-hop style dancing is mesmerizing. It makes you want to jump up and dance yourself!

Their outfits are so dashing!

They’re as dashing as Dasher, they prance like Prancer, they…dance like… well, obviously Dancer… you get my point! These guys are seriously talented and their ability to move in complete synchronicity is so impressive! Their costumes are reminiscent of the style of the wooden nutcrackers but without the silly hats. That’s probably for the best, I can’t imagine they’re easy to dance with.

Not the way these guys dance anyway!

They all interact with each other, with the odd moment where one of them will separate and have their own moment in the spotlight before they all snap back into dancing exactly in time.

I wish I could do that! I’m not jealous, you’re jealous!

At the very end they freeze once again, locked into their restrictive nutcracker positions. When one of them tips over at the end, your heart jumps, but not to fear, there is another nutcracker ready to catch him. There’s a deep metaphor for trust and friendship in there somewhere…
