Singing is known to have a comforting effect which is why some sing to help soothe others who are close to passing.

Singing is said to release stress-relieving and pleasure-inducing endorphins.

Kate Munger, the founder of the Threshold Choir which has more than 120 U.S. chapters of volunteers who provide comfort through song to those who are on the threshold of life, told Uplift that singing helps give the patient’s family “permission to be authentic with their tears, their laughter, their sorry, their grief.”

That’s why the grandsons in this video decided to sing “Amazing Grace” to their grandfather who was passing as they gathered around his hospital bed and held his hand.

The Christian hymn was published in 1779.

The lyrics were written in 1772 by English poet and Anglican clergyman John Newton. The hymn was written about a personal spiritual experience Newton had.

"Amazing Grace" is perhaps the best-known of all Christian hymns. The hymns lyrics and background should remind us just how amazing God's grace truly us.

“He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life’s path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by others’ reactions to what they took as his recalcitrant insubordination,” Wikipedia reads.

After working in the slave trade, Newtown quit seafaring to study Christian theology and become an abolitionist.

“Amazing Grace” ended up being written for the New Year’s Day sermon in 1773.

The song, which speaks of forgiveness, redemption, and deliverance of despair through God, is now one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.

Author Gilbert Chase called it “without a doubt the most famous of all the folk hymns.”

“By him singing that song, it opens the gates of Heaven for his Grandfather to come in. This made his Grandfather happy to have love ones like them to be by his side. They will see him again. It’s a blessing to have one pray, sing and really believe in God at these times. His singing touched my heart, so I know it touched his Grandfather. I started singing with him.”
