It’s not every day where you sing a song and the artist who wrote it belts the lyrics with you.

A chorus of students from the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Primary School in Haberfield had been working hard to learn one of Guy Sebastian’s songs. The song, aptly named “Choir”, was performed by a talented mix of boys and girls from different years.

Guy Sebastian is a well-known singer and songwriter who was pushed into the spotlight after his participation in the debut season of Australian Idol.

He was born in Klang, Malaysia to Malaysian and English parents. He moved to Adelaide at a very young age and began his singing career at age 14.

Since then he has produced songs with overwhelming successes. His first single “Angels Brought Me Here” debuted at number one on the music charts. “Just as I Am”, meanwhile, became a six-time platinum record.

The talented singer has been a mainstay in the Australian music scene, and he even became one of the coaches in the Australian leg of The Voice.

But that day, there are no chairs to be turned. There are only angel voices to surprise.

As the kids sang their way to the chorus, an excited Sebastian stood outside and listened to the performance. When the kids hit the chorus, the doors swung open and Sebastian began singing with the adorable choir.

Or at least the kids tried to sing because some of them couldn’t contain their awe, excitement, and tears. The kids jumped and hugged each other in disbelief. They can’t fully comprehend that one of their favorite singers is actually sharing the stage with them and is singing the song they worked so hard for.

At one point, Sebastian even tried encouraging the kids to continue with the song, but the children were long gone with the emotions.

In the end, the choir managed to hold themselves together and finished the song, but with giggly cheers and joyful chattering.

Sebastian expressed his admiration for the school’s future singers and was deeply moved by the performance.

“To see them singing ‘Choir’ was really very emotional and touching, so I’m glad I got to join in and surprise them,” Sebastian shared with KIIS 1065.

The surprise didn’t end there, though.

When one of the choir members asked him if he could sing his new song for them, Sebastian excitedly obliged. The kids at St. Joan of Arc were the first ones to listen to “Standing With You”. It was also the first time the song was performed live, and one of the first live gigs Sebastian had ever since the pandemic restrictions were put in place.

“It’s really cool that the first time we sang ‘Standing With You’ in public was in front of kids. It was also the first time I’ve sung a song live in front of people since COVID, so it was really special that it was at a small school with such talent & heart at the St Joan Of Arc Catholic Primary School in Haberfield,” Sebastian told KIIS 1065.

It was truly a confluence of artistic energy, both from him and the kids, amid the happy tears that will make anyone tear up.

The school’s principal shared that it was amazing that an extraordinary experience can help but some normalcy back into the kids’ lives. And we’re pretty sure that the event will be talked about for years to come.
