Daughtry has more than proved that he’s capable of consistently producing heartfelt tunes that are loved by all – but his 2019 self-titled album, “Daughtry”, has a soft spot in our hearts.
The album is bursting with beautiful music – catchy guitar riffs, thought-provoking lyrics and all the stuff Daughtry is best at.
It’s hard to pick a favorite of the bunch, but “Home” is definitely one of the top three songs on the record.
Most of us with kids can deeply relate to the lyrics in this tune.
The song is written from the perspective of somebody who has left home to explore the excitement of the outside world, but realizes that nothing compares to the warmth, comfort and love they experience in their own home.
In today’s modern world, travel is easier than ever, and it’s a common thing for youngsters to take long trips overseas and even live abroad for years on end.
Having to say goodbye to your children, after nearly two decades of raising them, is incredibly difficult.
Part of you wishes you could be selfish. You put so much time and effort into giving your children the best childhoods you could offer, and now they’re leaving you behind? It’s deeply unfair.
But you also know, in your heart of hearts, that you can’t stop your children from spreading their wings. You want the best for them, after all, no matter what that might look like in their eyes.
What certainly helps to let go is the knowledge that most kids don’t stay away for good.
As Daughtry is keen to put across in “Home”, there’s nothing quite like the place where you belong. He sums it up perfectly with the lyrics:
“I don’t regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old,
So I’m going home.”
It’s true that the excitement of travel and culture eventually wears off, but something that remains consistent is the comfort of a loving parent, sibling, or grandparent.
Our kids might be expanding out more than ever, settling in new towns, states and even countries, but home is where they can always return to after exploring all our modern world has to offer.
While you may be secretly sad to let your children out into the big wide world, it’s certainly not the end.
And when they’re tired and all adventured out, they’ll return home for the simplest of reasons – because they miss your home-cooked roast dinners or they can’t launder their clothes as well as you can.
Advancements in technology have made it easier than ever to keep in touch from across the world, but one thing never changes: the universal longing to be home or have a place that feels like home.
The final few verses in “Home” are particularly poignant:
“I’ve not always been the best man or friend for you.
But your love remains true.
And I don’t know why.
You always seem to give me another try.”
It’s true that parent-children relationships have their ups and downs, and children can be particularly trying once they’re all grown-up and want their independence!
But the love of a parent is endless. We always find it in our hearts to forgive our children for those petty arguments and their teenage strops.
