When Jaclyn Lovey serenaded viewers on The Voice, the world collectively fell in love.
The 17-year-old from Placerville, California, is a talented singer, songwriter, and musician, capable of playing the guitar, bass, upright bass, and ukulele.
According to her parents, she’s always had an ear for music and as a toddler, she’d become “transfixed” with songs on the radio. Later, when they noticed her natural talents for playing her toy guitar, they registered her for music classes.
While she blossomed under instruction, the teen notes that overall, she’s mostly self-taught. Jaclyn’s natural knack for learning instruments is impressive enough— but when she opens her mouth to sing, she truly wows the crowd. With a soft, angelic voice honeyed with the sound of innocence, Jaclyn boasts a purity hard to maintain in today’s world.
At first glance, she appears as sweet as her voice would suggest. However, upon looking at her lyrics, you get a glimpse of the depth that hides underneath. The song “Kwajalein” from Jaclyn’s EP 17 discusses the United States’ WWII assault on the tiny island of Kwajalein. During these events, the U.S. ultimately claimed the island as a territory after five days of hellish wartime attacks. You can hear her single below:
The teen recorded the EP with Australian country singer Bill Chambers, who was blown away by her talent and song-writing skills. But in the end, it was her performance on The Voice that truly made her a star.
Appearing in a collared shirt and long, floral skirt, Jaclyn has chosen to perform Presley’s 1961 hit “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”.
Released as part of Presley’s Blue Hawaii album in 1961, the song spent 20 consecutive weeks at the top of the music charts. Although the track was featured in the movie Blue Hawaii, it’s said that associates and movie producers actually didn’t like the single. If it wasn’t for Elvis’ insistence, it wouldn’t have been in the film at all.
Interestingly, in the Blue Hawaii movie, the song isn’t sung to a romantic love interest. In one scene, Elvis gives his grandmother a music box for her birthday. When she opens it, “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You” begins playing and Elvis sings along.
Since being released back in 1961, the song has been recorded by artists such as Bob Dylan, Tom Smothers, and UB40— but the version performed by Jaclyn is the purest we’ve heard yet.
From the beginning, the judges are completely mesmerized by the teen’s angelic voice.
Blake is the first judge to turn his chair, quickly being followed by Alicia Keys.
Although Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine seem to hesitate, by the end, they’re all singing her praise. “I’m going to tell you right now,” Clarkson says. “Nobody on this show sounds like you.”
“Nobody in this world sounds like you!” Blake immediately interjects.
It’s hard not to be impressed by Jaclyn’s performance— especially when you remember she’s just a teen! Since being uploaded, her angelic rendition has been viewed more than 8 million times.
“This was so pure. Really enjoyed this performance.”
“This girl is going to be a huge star one day. The soft music aesthetic that she has is going to be amazing if given the right opportunity and studios to work with. Absolutely love her.”
“This was so absolutely pure and beautiful! I felt inner peace!”
