Making it onto any national competition show is no easy task.

Ever since American Idol, people all over the world have been gripped with the idea of being discovered after auditioning for a reality competition show.

Though it may seem like an unlikely dream to some, the truth is that many different shows have been around for more than 10 years each—and plenty of people have been launched to superstardom after performing on these shows. Still, making it onto one of these shows is difficult enough, let alone competing in the finals.

But that’s exactly what the person in this performance managed to do.

The artist we’re talking about is James Arthur, who competed on The X Factor UK in 2012.

For those who didn’t see the season when it was on the air, Arthur stunned the judges from the very beginning when he auditioned by singing “Young” by Tulisa.

Although the song is originally sung and performed by a woman, Arthur turned it into something completely his own and blew the whole crowd away. When it was over, the audience gave him a huge round of applause and he got all the yeses he needed to continue!

From there, he went on to do more and more impressive performances… all the way up to the finals.

In fitting with his first audition, Arthur chose to sing “Impossible” by Shontelle as his final song.

Once again, even though the song was sung by a woman, Arthur interpreted it his own way to make it fit perfectly. From the very beginning, it’s so clear just how powerful and soulful his voice is.

If anything, Arthur has only gotten more and more confident since the beginning of the show—and his voice absolutely soars. When he gets to the chorus, the whole crowd is cheering along with him.

Still, it only gets more exciting and passionate as it continues.

Though the original song is soulful and a little bit slow, Arthur’s version turns it into a stadium-sized rock anthem!

Before the song is over, Arthur even has the judges sticking their arms in the air to salute him. After some time, judge Nicole Scherzinger even stands up in her chair and starts dancing to the song.

Before he finally ends the song, ht takes his voice all the way down to a quiet whisper… before bringing it back in a huge explosion of passion.

When he finally sings the last note, the crowd gives him a bigger round of applause than nearly anyone has ever heard.

As it turns out, Arthur’s performance on that season was enough to win the show for him!

Still, that wasn’t the end of Arthur’s musical career. Since 2012, he has gone on to sign with a record label and launch his own solo career. Although you may not have heard of him, he has a huge song of his own called “Say You Won’t Let Go” that has nearly a billion views on YouTube! Even if you didn’t know the name until now, you’ve almost definitely heard this one before:

Needless to say, the dream of being discovered is still alive and well!

Most of all, Arthur’s rise to stardom shows that it’s so important to put yourself out there. Although he clearly had the talent all along, his unique artistic choices and his interpretations of the songs themselves sent him over the edge.
