Shows like The X Factor have been on for a long time, and plenty of talent has been discovered over the years.
For those who don’t know, The X Factor was a franchise that was started by Simon Cowell of American Idol fame. Though it remains a franchise around the world, in the United States it only ran from 2011 to 2013 and was gradually phased out and replaced with America’s Got Talent, which is still on the air today.
Regardless, there has been plenty of talent that has gone on the show over the years, along with plenty of great stories.
This audition from 2012 is just one great example.
As the contestant walks out, she introduces herself as Jillian Jensen, and is just 19 years old.
Before she starts singing, she talks a little bit to the judges as they all get to know each other. After a moment, it becomes clear that she and judge Demi Lovato have a connection—and that Jensen is a fan! She tells Lovato that they actually both have tattoos that say “stay strong” on their bodies, and that they both probably have them for similar reasons.
A moment later, Jensen looks like she may be on the verge of tears.
As she delicately explains, Jensen was bullied a lot in high school.
As she makes this revelation, the audience cheers for her! As she explains, she was bullied both in middle school and high school. Back then, she would often cry herself to sleep wondering what she could do and how she was going to make it through. Regardless, she knew she was passionate about music and she found inspiration to keep going wherever she could.
In her backstage interviews, she gets very emotional about the whole experience.
After all that, Lovato tells her that today, they’re the ones onstage and all the bullies are at home watching.
When it’s all over, Jensen takes a breath and starts her performance. Everyone in the crowd is already ready for her to deliver big emotions through her song. As she starts off, her voice is low before it rises in emotion and pitch.
The crowd cheers her along the whole way as she is nearly overcome with tears. It’s clear that Jensen has a unique voice and plenty of musical talent. While the emotions of it all, get in the way of the performance somewhat—the audience is fully on her side.
As she watches, Lovato is in tears right along with her.
When it’s all over, Lovato goes onstage and gives her a hug.
After that, it’s time for the judges to give her notes on her performance. As they all explain, nobody has ever seen anyone pour so much emotion into a musical performance before. When it gets to the end, even Simon Cowell tells Jensen that her performance was incredible—and that she was able to sing even through all the pain. When it’s finally over, the judges give her four yeses—and the crowd goes wild.
Although there have been many inspiring performances on the show over the years, Jensen’s was one of the best! Watch the full clip below:
