The Voice has finally returned to our TV screens and there are some people to watch out for this season!

The popular reality singing competition returned for its 16th season and added a new coach to the lineup – John Legend! John joins the likes of coaches who’ve been there from the beginning, like Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, and slightly newer coach, Kelly Clarkson.

A somewhat rare moment on The Voice is when all four coaches turn their chairs during a blind audition. When that happens, it means that they really like the singer and there’s going to be a fight over which team that person gets added to.

For her blind audition, Maelyn chose to sing “Fields of Gold” by Sting from his 1993 album Ten Summoner’s Tales.

Less than 40 seconds after she began singing, all four coaches had turned their chairs to see her. The first to slam his buzzer was Adam Levine, milliseconds later Blake Shelton was turning out.

Right after Luke and Adam was Kelly Clarkson. John Legend took his time to turn around but still turned before the 40-second mark.

By the time she was done singing, all four coaches were out of their chairs and cheering for Maelyn. Kelly Clarkson seemed the most excited by Maelyn, but Blake was the first to give her some feedback. He said:

“You just have such precision and power in your voice. It cuts through everything. In the first few notes, it was like ‘whoa.’ It literally moved me to hear you sing.”

Kelly commended Maelyn for having the ability to connect with the coaches because she has a God-given gift. According to Kelly, “Fields of Gold” is a hard song to cover, but Maelyn made it her own and was able to stand out.

John Legend had a lot to say to Maelyn. He told her that she showed off her skill, but that she also has magic. He said:

“It made the high notes really pierce through, but it also made the more quiet moments feel like you were caressing the notes in the right way. That is how you really make it feel beautiful so we don’t have to really think about it… we just feel it.”

The fighting over who got to add Maelyn to their team started, with Adam trying to sway him over to Team Levine, but John told her maybe not to go with a coach who was so jaded after many years on the show.

Maelyn made the choice to become John Legend’s first team member! And the superstar singer was so excited to add Maelyn to his roster.

You can learn more about Maelyn from her profile on The Voice’s website:

Maelyn has always loved music, despite facing some challenges. At two years old, she had tubes inserted into her ears to treat recurring ear infections. The tubes ultimately damaged her eardrums and left her deaf in her right ear and with only 80% hearing in the left ear. But that didn’t stop her.

At 13, Maelyn started voice lessons and became heavily involved in musical theater. At 17, she was encouraged to try Broadway and her parents moved with her to New York City to give it a shot. At 21, she stepped away from Broadway and is now focusing on creating original music.
