If you’re auditioning for a talent show, it’s important to make a striking impression.

As we all know from our own life experience, sometimes just being talented isn’t enough. Though it’s certainly important to have some skill at whatever it is you’re doing, presentation plays a huge role as well—and doing something unexpected can take everything to an entirely new level. Sometimes doing something that seems completely opposite of what you’d do is the key to success.

And that’s exactly what happened on episode of The Voice.

As many people may know, The Voice is a franchise with all kinds of international iterations.

On each version of the show, contestants come out to perform in front of a panel of judges who have their backs turned to the stage. If they like what they hear, they hit their buzzers to turn around and see the performer.

After that, all the judges who hit their buzzer compete to get the contestant on their team. The performance we’re talking about today took place on Norway’s version of the show in 2017—and it was definitely unexpected.

Like all the other shows, it began with the lights down and the judges’ backs turned.

As the song starts, a gentle guitar backing track starts playing… followed by some familiar lyrics.

Before long, the audience is cheering because they recognize it. As it turns out, it’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper!

While the original one is a synth-heavy pop song that you can dance to, this performer decides to take it in a completely different direction. Instead of that original ‘80s sound, he decides to do it as a folk ballad.

What’s clear is that nobody has heard anything like it before—and that his voice is amazing!

As the song continues, many of the judges can’t help but smile along with his singing.

It’s such a strange version of the song that nobody really knows how to react to it. After he hits a particularly high note, one of the judges smashes his buzzer to turn around!

Though only one of the judges hit their buzzer, eventually all the others need to turn around to see who was singing as well. When the big reveal finally happens, none of them can believe their eyes. Even though the song was intended for a woman, in front of them is a huge adult man!

Without a doubt, nobody was expecting to see what they saw.

When it’s finally over, the contestant introduces himself as Magnus Bokn.

While everyone gives their compliments to Bokn’s performance, the fact remains that only one of the judges actually turned. Still, perhaps the most surprising thing about the performance is that it didn’t get Bokn a four-chair turn!

As anyone who watches The Voice will probably agree, Bokn’s song choice and unique delivery is definitely one of the more impressive and interesting performances the show has ever seen!

Fortunately, Bokn’s musical career didn’t end there.

Bokn continued on the show into the later rounds and has also taken efforts to launch his own musical career.

To date, he has a musical single all his own on Spotify as well as his own Facebook page to promote his music. While the path to musical excellence is definitely not an easy one, Bokn is off to a great start with this performance! Though nobody knows where he’ll end up in the future, we’re expecting great things.

Congratulations to Magnus Bokn on a truly memorable performance! Watch the full audition in the clip below:
