If you’re a fan of The Voice, you probably know that the 2019 season is shaping up to be one of the best of all time.
Speaking more generally, The Voice is definitely the best of all the singing shows because it just adds so many more interesting elements than the others do.
While there are always good singers on any competition show, there are multiple layers of competition on The Voice—among the contestants and among the judges—and there are all kinds of twists as well.
For just one example, consider this recent audition on the show.
Just like every audition, this one starts with all the judges’ backs turned to the stage.
After a few moments, an acoustic guitar starts playing and a gentle female voice sings out. Before long, it’s clear that she’s covering “Electric Love” by Michigan-based artist Borns.
After singing only two or three words of the song, judge Kelly Clarkson has heard enough of her unique voice to know it’s a great one. After just seconds, she smashes her buzzer and turns around.
Still, the song isn’t even close to over.
By the time she gets to the song’s first hook, it’s clear that her tone and delivery are completely unique compared to the original.
Second to hit his buzzer is judge John Legend, who turns around to look at the performer as well.
Although many of the singers on the show go for huge power or a huge streamlined pop sound, this singer does an old-fashioned, folksy take on a pop song that absolutely nobody expected. When it’s finally over, all the rest of the judges turn around to see what they missed out on.
Needless to say, nobody expected the contestant to be so young!
After a moment or two, judge Blake Shelton asks the singer to introduce herself.
She says that her name is Mikaela Astel and that she’s just 14 years old! At this, everyone shares a moment of surprise. After that, it’s time for the judges to make their own pitches for who should get to coach her.
Right off the bat, Clarkson reminds her that she hit her buzzer after only hearing her sing a couple of notes! She also tells her that she’s used to working with 14 years old and that Astel’s perfect tone is something that can’t be taught.
Still, Legend wants to get his say in as well.
For his part, he tells her that he expects her to be a huge star.
When it’s over, she has a chance to pick the coach she wants to work with. After a second, she announces that she’s going to Team Kelly—and Kelly couldn’t be more excited!
While there are plenty of amazing performers on this show, what stands about this one is just how unique Astel’s voice is at such an incredibly young age. Though there’s no telling where she will end up ultimately, Astel’s talent shined through so clearly and with such a perfect song choice.
Congratulations to Mikaela Astel on making it onto Kelly Clarkson’s team! Watch the full performance in the clip below:
