If you’re a fan of reality competition shows, chances are you’ve seen at least a few episodes of The Voice.

For those who haven’t, the premise behind it is simple—but it’s a little more interesting and complicated than a show like American Idol, for example.

When the show begins, all the contestants appear before a panel of judges in a “blind audition.” This means the judges can’t see who’s performing and have to judge them based on their voice alone.

If they like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers to turn around and see them.

This dynamic is in place because the show has two levels of competition built into it.

From the more obvious side, the contestants are all competing with each other to see who is the best singer.

But beyond that, the judges are also competing to see who can build the best team of contestants—and who can be the best vocal coach. The show began in Holland but has since spread around the world into a global franchise.

Regardless, the performance we’re talking about today actually came from the original show in its 2013 season.

Like any other performance, this one started with the contestant walking out onstage before the judges, who have their backs turned.

The contestant’s name is Mitchell Brunings and he chooses to sing “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Though it goes without saying, the original is a timeless classic of the reggae genre and it has spoken to so many people around the world.

Still, it’s a tough song when it comes to showcasing what someone’s voice can do. Even so, Brunings was confident that he could make it sing for him.

And as it turns out, he was totally correct.

From the very first notes, Brunings is able to channel Marley’s distinctive voice so perfectly—but he adds his own beauty and soulfulness to it!

After just a few notes, all four of the judges smash their buzzers and turn around to see who’s singing! Still, there’s so much more of the performance to go. As he continues, his voice only gets more and more soulful.

Although it’s not exactly the way Bob Marley sings it, he still brings his spirit into it—and it clearly has a profound effect on his audience. For their part, the judges can’t stop themselves for calling out and even putting their hands over the hearts.

While there have been plenty of great performances on the show before, few of them have been as spiritual as this one was.

When it’s all over, the crowd gives him a huge round of applause!

Since the clip was uploaded, it has earned some 10 million views on YouTube. Though it goes without saying, it takes a combination of a great voice and a great song choice to make a huge impression on shows like this one.

In the case of Brunings, he definitely accomplished both so perfectly! Though it’s not easy to take on a Bob Marley song and do it justice (or to do it in a way that showcases vocal strength), Brunings nailed it!
