While the Got Talent franchise has brought the world all kinds of incredible new stars, the main reason we keep coming back is for the stories.
There’s definitely no shortage of talented singers, dancers and performers across the world, but we already see people like that on a daily basis on television and billboards already.
Part of what makes these competition shows so exciting is that it highlights all kinds of underdog stories that we wouldn’t know about otherwise. And as it turns out, these stories come from all over the world.
That’s what makes this audition from Ireland’s Got Talent so special.
When it starts, a man and a woman of about equal height walk out on stage together.
They introduce themselves as Sharon and Brandon. When the judges ask if they are friends, Sharon replies that actually Brandon is her son! Because she looks so young, the judges can’t really believe what they’re hearing. After they ask if they’ve been singing together for a long time, Sharon gets slightly teary-eyed after a moment.
As it turns out, there’s a much deeper meaning behind the song they choose to sing.
Before the performance, Sharon tells the crowd that her son Brandon had recently fallen ill.
The case was so serious that he was on life support. He’d been having so many seizures that the doctors at the hospital were convinced that he wasn’t going to pull through. At the hospital that day, Sharon was ready to say goodbye to her son for good. Fortunately, he was able to stabilize and pull through a few days later. When she tells everyone this, the crowd erupts into applause.
With that in mind, the two begin their performance.
Though it probably goes without saying, this mother son duo can definitely sing!
The song they chose to sing was “You Are The Reason” by Calum Scott, a sad song that explains how it feels to suffer because someone you know and love is suffering. Though it starts off well, it gets even better when the two start harmonizing.
The audience can clearly see and hear the emotion in every note of their singing. When they get to the chorus, Brandon and Sharon’s voices soar.
Throughout their performance, the audience stops multiple times to applaud—and both the mother and son can’t help but cry.
The emotional bond between these two is so strong and obvious.
Towards the end of the song, the emotional release is so great that their voices start to crack. As they finish the song, the audience gives them a standing ovation and the entire audience is in tears. Although the performance may not have been the most technically perfect, it’s definitely one of the most emotional we’ve ever seen.
Still, the next surprise comes when the judges are supposed to evaluate their song.
Before anyone can say anything, the host starts approaching the judges’ table from offstage.
As she walks up, the whole crowd starts clapping in excitement because they know what comes next! Before anyone can discuss anything else, the host has some simple words for everyone:
“They’re mine!”
With that, she smashes the Golden Buzzer and the entire crowd is up on their feet again!
The ending of the clip is just about as emotional as anything you’re likely to see on any of these shows.
At the end of it all, they do another interview with Sharon and Brandon. “Today meant so much,” Sharon says. “I thought I’d never see my Brandon again. Just to stand be on the stage, I was a winner.” Though their story definitely moved us, there’s no doubt that they are both great singers as well—and they chose the perfect song. Though there’s no telling how the competition will end up, this audition was a strong start.
