Although living a creative life and expressing yourself is hard in all kinds of ways, self-confidence is one of the biggest obstacles.
We could have so much natural talent and a burning desire to perform… but sometimes the fear overwhelms us and we never put ourselves out there.
Though it takes a lot of confidence to be vulnerable before a bunch of strangers. Sometimes it takes another person believing in us more than anyone else for us to get the courage we need to perform.
In some cases, that person could even be one of our children!
That was the case in one performance from the 2017 season of Britain’s Got Talent.
As everything begins, the woman who is supposed to perform is shaking with nervousness backstage. Finally, she makes it onstage and introduces herself as Sian. She’s 31 years old and a mother of three kids… and it’s clear to all the judges right away that she’s so nervous.
The judges ask why she feels this way and why she’s so nervous. She says she’s scared that she might hear that she’s not very good… to which the judges say “you’ve come to the right place!”
Still, it wasn’t her who applied to be on the show—it was her daughter!
Before long, she takes a deep breath and starts into her performance.
The song she decides to sing “Ave Maria,” one of the most iconic and soulful songs out there. As she begins, it’s clear that she definitely has a good voice… but it seems like the judges don’t agree.
After just a few moments, judge Simon Cowell raises his hand to cut her off. As he explains, the energy was off—she was singing the song too brightly and happily and it was draining all the emotion out of the song! Although she’s taken aback, Cowell gives her another chance. He asks if she can sing “With You” by Sam Bailey and she says she knows it.
A moment later, she takes a breath and gets ready to sing.
Although she flubs the beginning, Cowell even gives her a third chance and has her start again!
After calming herself down, she starts singing the song. This time, her voice rings out so clearly and matches the emotion of the song! Before long, everyone is on the edge of their seats listening to her sing. Needless to say, her daughter did the right thing by putting her in the show! It’s clear that Sian has incredible control of her voice and plenty of emotion behind it as well.
As the song goes on, her voice truly soars.
When it’s all over, the crowd gets on their feet for a huge standing ovation!
Right after, Sian is overcome with emotion and starts crying—and her daughter in the audience is crying as well! As Cowell says, the fact that she wasn’t prepared for the second song made it so much better because she was so relaxed and expressive! Before long, its time for everyone to vote… and she gets four yeses! If it weren’t for her daughter, she wouldn’t have performed… but everyone in the crowd was so glad that she did.
