Forty years of Elvira. That’s four decades of jamming to the same hit for The Oak Ridge Boys.
They started out as The Oak Ridge Quartet in the forties and remained as a group all the way to the seventies before transitioning to country music.
That’s a really long time.
“Elvira” is not about a woman, but rather a street in East Nashville.
The song came about when Dallas Frazier was sitting in a car with Ray Baker when they almost ran a red light at the intersection of Gallatin Road and a side street called Elvira.
Dallas began singing the melody right then and there.
It was a minor hit for Frazier in 1966 and only began to gain fame after The Oak Ridge Boys sang it in 1981.
And now, forty years since the release, the boys are back for a live recorded session of “Elvira“.
Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban aren’t exactly boys anymore but the energy may have you thinking otherwise.
These guys would put so many younger groups to shame!

It’s such an upbeat melody!
The boys released their version on the 1981 album Fancy Free. “Elvira” was certified platinum for sales of two million units by the Recording Industry Association of America.
For years it shared that distinction with “Islands in the Stream” by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
Now imagine yourself driving down the country with this song on full blast.
It’s not a difficult song to sing either.
If you find yourself in the company of good friends, a guitar, and some percussion instruments, this is a tune guaranteed to loosen things up a bit!
A bonfire in the country sounds about right!
