Blind singer performs ‘Rise Up’ on ‘Got Talent’ and has all the judges in tears

October 25th, 2019

Of all the different kinds of television shows out there, few genres have lasted as long as reality competition shows.

Whether you start the timeline at a show like Survivor or more recently with a show like American Idol, these shows have remained hugely popular to this day.

Still, in recent years, singing and competition shows have only grown more and more popular—with many different versions and varieties out there as well. While we all have our favorites, one of the most enduring is America’s Got Talent, a variety show pitting all kinds of different talents against one another.

Still, what many people don’t know is that the Got Talent franchise is actually an international one.

Though the format of the show remains the same abroad, the contestants and the individual stories are different.

In each episode, a contestant comes out onstage to perform before a panel of judges. If the judges and the audience like the performance, that person can be voted forward on the show and can compete in the later rounds.

On the other hand, if the judges don’t like it, they can hit their buzzers to vote them off the show. Still, one of the most important things about a person’s audition is that they have a little something extra that sets them apart.

And that was definitely the case for this performer.

The clip we’re talking about today comes from the 2019 season of Australia’s Got Talent.

Like any other episode, it begins with contestant Paul Kapeleris walking out onstage to introduce himself to the judges. As he explains, he is nearly blind as a result of a rare disease—and he has only about 5% of his vision.

Because of that, Kapeleris has a very close relationship with his mother, who helps him do all kinds of things in his daily life. With her support, he’s confident enough to share his talent with the world.

With all that said, the judges clear the way for him to perform.

A moment later, Kaperelis starts playing a delicate piano melody on the piano.

The song he decides to play is “Rise Up” by Andre Day. Though it goes without saying, “Rise Up” is an incredibly powerful song and one of the most soulful recordings in recent years.

It’s also not the easiest song to perform vocally—after all, it stretches between high and low notes and carries a lot of emotion while doing it. Even so, Kapeleris’s voice is so assured and so smooth from the very beginning.

Right away, everyone knows they’re in for something special.

As the judges watch him, everyone seems in complete awe of how precise and heartfelt his audition is.

It doesn’t take long for many of the judges to have tears in their eyes. When it’s all over, everyone gets on their feet to give him a standing ovation.

Since the clip was loaded online, it has been viewed about 1.5 million times… though it shows no sign of stopping. Above all, stories like Kaperelis’s are what shows like Got Talent are all about. While his voice was incredible, his story and the emotion he put into it were just as impressive.
