For those who don’t know, Prince sang “Purple Rain” during a torrential downpour at Super Bowl XLI.

Prince Rogers Nelson, known onstage as Prince, skyrocketed to fame at the early age of 19 years old after he was signed by Warner Bros. Records. “Purple Rain” is a seven-minute long guitar masterpiece made for the hit movie Purple Rain (released in 1984) starring the iconic artist. The song went on to leave quite the legacy, landing it on the Rolling Stone top 500 Greatest Songs of All Times list at number 144.

When it comes to live-performances, not many can come close to topping Prince—especially when he has a little bit of help from mother nature.

That’s what happened in Miami, Florida when Prince was set to perform for the Super Bowl XLI halftime show.

When production manager Bruce Rogers asked if Prince was okay performing in the rain, he responded: “Can you make it rain any harder?”

We wouldn’t expect anything less from the iconic superstar, who took the stage with the rain flying sideways through the air. Being that “Purple Rain” has one of the best guitar solos of all time, it was no surprise when he began using four separate electric guitars.

Prince’s “Love Symbol” came about in 1993, when the music icon started using the symbol as his actual name.

Fun fact: Prince came up with the symbol by putting the symbols for male and female together.
