When you spend your whole life getting on stage to play someone else, it can be a huge adjustment to get up there and be no one else but yourself.

For 37-year-old mother Rachael Wooding, that’s exactly what happened when she auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent.

Rachael is no stranger to the stage. As an actress for musical theater, she certainly has the technical skills and training to give a flawless performance. However, she’s nervous because she’s not used to getting judged as herself. It’s totally different if she, say, doesn’t get a part because she doesn’t play the character as the casting director wanted. Here, she’s got no masks to hide behind – it’s all her.

Plus, it’s been a minute since Rachael stepped onto a stage.

At age 37, she’s a new mom to an adorable little girl, and once she entered motherhood, she pressed paused on her career in musical theater.

The stage jitters must be such a strange sensation for Rachael, but I’ll bet that her adrenaline is through the roof!

When she starts to sing, it’s understated but beautiful. This was a risky road to take because the judges could have been impatient with the song choice. However, her voice is so captivating that they stick it out and happily await the buildup.

Plus, the words to this song are so powerful. The impact that they have on everyone in the audience is clear. Rachael’s beautiful voice does the lyrics justice.

While she does have a pretty traditional musical theater voice, there is also so much soul in there, and even a little bit of grit. When she gets to the middle of the song, the full power of her voice really shines through.

Her performance is so moving that the judges even shed a tear or two.

It’s performances like these that remind you that it’s not always about being full-volume the whole way through. Sometimes, it’s about pouring your heart and your soul into each and every word and letting the simplicity do the talking.

Do you think that Rachael deserves a standing ovation from the judges? Do you think that she really has a special something that puts her a step above every other musical theater singer?

What a lovely moment to witness! Rachael has always wondered if she would be able to make it with nothing but her own self, no characters to play or fictional shoes to fill. As an actor, it can be difficult to flip that switch, but she really did a lovely job for this audition.

When Simon says that it’s the “best version of this song” he’s ever heard, that just puts the cherry on top of everything else.
