Though it’s been said again and again, there are few musical reality shows that are as compelling as The Voice.
While the show began as in Holland all the way back in 2006, it has since spawned all sorts of regional sub-franchises and remains a popular show around the world.
Unlike a competing show like American Idol, the competition on The Voice takes place in multiple levels. First off, all the judges start every performance with their backs turned to the contestants to make it a blind audition. Beyond that, the judges also compete for contestants to add to their teams, with the hope of winning the show themselves.
Needless to say, this combination can make for some exciting auditions.
That was definitely the case for one audition from the 2018 season of the show.
As always, it began with everyone turned away from the stage and all the lights down low. Although many contestants ease their way into their songs, this one starts with a hit from the horns section and a soaring vocal—so much so that judge Kelly Clarkson jumps in her chair.
The song she’s performing is “Momma Knows Best” by Jessie J. Before long, all the judges are exchanging glances with one another at this vocalist’s raw power.
It only takes a moment for them to realize they’re about to witness something truly special.
The first one to act out of the group is judge Adam Levine, who deliberately blocks judge Jennifer Hudson as he buzzes in.
As the song continues, the performance only gets more and more hair-raising and powerful! Although it’s not the most technically precise song the judges have ever heard, the sheer power she was able to summon was enough to knock all the judges back in their seats.
When the performance is finally over (after a huge final note), the whole crowd gives her a huge round of applause—and judges Blake Shelton and Hudson ring in as well.
After that, it’s time for the judges to compete!
First, the performer introduces herself as Radha.
As everyone turns around, the judges are so excited to see her. Right away, Levine says that Radha’s voice blew him away from the very first notes. After more and more compliments, Hudson gives her some kind words even though she can’t compete for her.
Next up is Shelton, who says that nobody has ever “vocally kicked the door down” in the blind audition round the way that she did! Because it was a big risk, everybody was impressed.
When it’s all over, it’s time for everybody to compete.
After thinking it over for a moment, Radha makes her decision to go with Levine!
Let’s face it, after Levine’s effusive praise of her performance, everybody knew that it couldn’t go any other way. Above all, though, Radha’s audition shows just how powerful it can be to come out of the gate with so much confidence!
While it’s definitely a risk to throw everything on the table from the very beginning rather than build up to it, she had enough power to start strong and finish strong—and all the judges noticed.
