When we hear funk music, our minds associate it with lively dancing, upbeat rhythm and a melodious chorus of instruments.
It’s one of the best genres that is almost always present in every joyous occasion. One of the best is Scary Pockets, a musical group that focuses on groovy funk videos.
They release weekly covers on their YouTube channel which now has over 600,000 subscribers.
This group also collaborates with various artists or musicians in their performances. One of their popular arrangements was a funk version of Etta James and Lauryn Hill, a mashup that garnered over 4.5 million views.
In 2019, they released a funk rendition of “What’s Love Got to Do With It” by American-born Swiss singer, songwriter and dancer Tina Turner.
This was Turner’s most popular song released in 1987 from her fifth album called Private Dancer. This is originally a pop genre with the song portraying conflicted feelings with somebody. However, Scary Pockets turned this into a dance kind of music yet retaining emotions that the song wanted to portray.
If you want to listen to your favorite oldies with a happy twist, you’re sure to love this cover!
The session started with Harlem-based guest singer, songwriter and producer Caleb Hawley’s soulful voice.
He retained the soul of the music even after reinventing it as funk. Furthermore, the backing musicians provided him a funky energy that he could work with comfortably.
Hawley danced through his performance, clearly showing that he was really feeling the funky mood in the studio.
His dance moves are contagious, and anyone hearing this would jump in to join the groove!
The instrumentalists were living in their own world, but Jack Conte’s performance was simply out of this world.
As everyone was focused on keeping up with the beat, Conte was smiling throughout the performance and was head-bopping as he slams the keys with extreme enthusiasm.
Overall, they were a terrific combination and Hawley was a perfect fit for the song.
Even though this kind of music isn’t really his genre, he did a great job in stepping up his game to vibe with the seasoned funk musicians.
For those who don’t know, Scary Pockets was formed by Patreon co-founder Jack Conte and Ryan Lerman in 2017.
Jack Conte was born in San Francisco in 1984 and has since dedicated his life to composition and music.
He’s been uploading music videos on YouTube since 2007. He wants to make sure his production has no lip-syncing or other added effects like auto-tune as he aims to show the viewers raw talent through live shows. His rule was: “what you see is what you get.”
Meanwhile, Caleb Hawley remains an underrated artist with a YouTube channel that currently has 7,000 subscribers.
He became a contestant on American Idol Season 10 in 2011.
However, he only reached the top 25. Despite this, he continues to pursue his passion for music, achieving success his own way by collaborating with other artists and doing live performances while working on his originals.
If you try to listen to one of his works, you’ll understand the depth of his passion.
Scary Pockets continues to do music to this day—and if you like funk music, you owe it to yourself to check some of their music out.
