People audition for shows like “The Voice” and “The X Factor” for all sorts of reasons. Some of them want to challenge themselves, others want to launch a musical career, and some are just trying to get their voices heard — literally. For one man, his 2018 “X Factor” audition was a tribute to his late mother.

J-Sol was 25 years old when he appeared for his audition.

He was quiet and shy as he introduced himself to the judges, clearly feeling nervous about his upcoming performance. But he had someone special driving him on.

“I suddenly lost my mum in 2015,” he said. “I’ve always been terrified to do this show, but I was going through texts and I remember my mum always telling me: ‘You need to do ‘The X Factor’. I was reading her texts, and I was like, ‘You know what? I want to finally take on something she’s told me to do. I just want to inspire someone else.”

It’s always a gamble to perform an original song.

You’re putting yourself out there in one of the most frightening ways possible — and then you’re taking it to the next level. With so much vulnerability, it’s no wonder that J-Sol seemed nervous. But he still gave it his all.

J-Sol shared that his mother’s name was Victoria.

He sang his song for her. Long before he finished, the judges were in tears.

His voice ranged from sweet to powerful. It was a performance that tugged at the heartstrings, not only because of his great talent but also because of the meaning behind the song.

When he finished, the crowd leaped to its feet to applaud him.

Judge Louis Tomlinson immediately ran up onstage to give J-Sol a hug and thank him for the song.

“J-Sol, in 2014, I lost my father very unexpectedly and I’ll never forget how the world swallowed me up on that day when I found out,” said Judge Ayda Field, her eyes filled with tears. “And I just want to thank you, ‘cause that was a beautiful song and a powerful song, and I know your mom would be really proud of you.”

J-Sol was also wiping tears from his eyes.

He must’ve been wondering what his mother would have said if she had been there with him. It was clear to everyone that he loved her deeply.

“That is the power of music, that you can write such a beautiful song that’s touched us all on this panel,” said Tomlinson. “It was absolutely brilliant, it was moving…you’re a legend for what you’ve just done.”

Judge Simon Cowell was happy to vote him through with his first yes, which was quickly followed by three more.

Although J-Sol will never know what might’ve happened had he auditioned earlier but he knows that he made his mother proud. And there’s no doubt he honored her beautifully with his first audition, dedicated to her.
