Serving in the military is a lot of hard work. Every once and a while, it’s important for soldiers to sit back, relax, and unwind from the incredible stresses of the job. For one soldier in Zurich, Switzerland though, his method of relaxation involves even more additional exercise — specifically, dance.
The soldier was caught on camera a few years back doing the most incredible Michael Jackson style dance right in the center of the base.
The goofy video has since gone on to receive almost four million views, and if you are a fan of dance, you definitely have to check it out.
When the soldier started dancing that day, no one could believe it.
He was dressed in his military uniform, complete with camouflage pants, a jacket, hat, and a pair of very sturdy boots.
When you are trying to move like Michael Jackson does, heavy boots are pretty much the last thing that you want to deal with.
Jackson is known for his incredibly smooth style of dance where he literally appears to be gliding across the floor. They call it the moonwalk. Jackson first performed the dance move back in 1983 during a live broadcast of the song “Billie Jean”.
However, the Swiss soldier proved that it’s entirely possible to do the moonwalk, even while wearing a full uniform.
It just takes a lot of practice!
Considering Switzerland hasn’t been involved in a war in pretty much forever, some people surmise that the soldiers on base have more downtime for practicing dance than most. At least, that’s what several YouTube commenters jokingly speculated.
“This is what happens when you don’t fight since 1613,” wrote user George Hulea Nicolas.
While the year 1613 referenced in the comment above really has no factual historical basis, it is true that Switzerland has a long-standing policy of sitting on the sidelines while foreign conflicts are taking place. Surprisingly, they managed to stay out of both WWI and WWII.
The country has the oldest policy of military neutrality in the world.
That means that the soldiers often get to spend an extended amount of time simply hanging out on base.
In the video, hundreds of soldiers can be seen standing all around the edges of the outdoor lot and looking on in amazement.
They guy’s dance is extremely entertaining and the people filming the video can be heard cracking up with laughter in the background.
The man charged in circles, left and right, and back and forth, making sure everyone got a spectacular view of the show.
At one point, he even sprinted past dozens of soldiers standing in a long line, giving all of the individuals each high-fives.
Everyone started cheering as it happened. Then, shortly after, he finished the performance to roaring applause.
Someone doing a full Thriller-esque dance in the middle of the base is definitely not something that you get to see every day, that’s for sure.
One has to wonder, did he really choose the right profession? This is a man that should be selling out shows in Las Vegas and wowing people worldwide with his talents.
Although, it seems like for the time being, dancing is still just a hobby for him. At the end of the day, he is still a soldier first and foremost, albeit one that can move really, really well. For that, we salute him.
