The song “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper is an infectious duet from the movie A Star Is Born featuring both Cooper and Gaga. It’s become such a huge hit that karaoke bars all over the world have students, workers, and people just having fun belting out the song.
Awards such as a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, two Grammys (Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media), and an Oscar for Best Original Song only served to have the song streamed and played nonstop everywhere you go.
Then there are the cover versions.
Artists had a go at the powerful ballad with names like Kelly Clarkson and Garth Brooks, Nick Jonas, Tori Kelly and Ally Brooke, and many others have one way or another released their rendition.
Meet Terence James.
This 29-year-old Scottish singer and songwriter is also a music producer who has been living in France for the past 27 years. He took the stage where he proceeded to blow everybody away with his version of “Shallow“.
Yes, he’s a looker, but it’s this performance on The Voice All Stars France that has the internet buzzing.
Great song choice as “Shallow” demands control, a good tone, and impressive range all while keeping the melody at a decent space. It’s a song that should be sung with emotion.
As Gaga herself put it,
“To me, that conversation is what makes the song successful and beautiful and why people cry when they hear it. It’s because that man and woman connect, and they are listening to each other.”
Terence is going at it by himself.
The coaches, Florent Pagny, Mika, Jenifer, Zazie and Patrick Fiori weren’t expecting a voice of this caliber when the now signature intro of the song began playing.
It’s a shame that there wasn’t a live audience, but Terence isn’t affected. He’s surrounded by the faces of fans thanks to the power of technology.
He’s got that soft, pillowy voice usually associated with boy bands but what James has is range.
“Shallow” is a song that builds in its intensity, clearly associating itself with the lyrics. It’s that progression of notes and the explosion of emotions that distinguishes the real singers from others.
It starts with a restrained tone, with James slowly bringing the song to its now famous climax. A chilling, almost shouting release of words only this time it’s not a duet but a man showing his talents.

This truly is a near-perfect performance. The only missing factors being a live audience and a female partner. It’s a song that just somehow always works as a duet. But hey, not everyone can sing like Terence.
Maybe a partner would have just held him back.
