Because there are so many shows out there that give people the opportunity to prove their skills, it can sometimes be tough to stand out.
On some singing competition shows, the focus is only on a person’s singing voice. In those situations, the key thing is to choose the right song to represent yourself—and to have the skills to back it up.
On shows like The Voice, however, sometimes contestants are allowed to play their own instruments to back up their vocals.
And that was the case on one special audition from the 2017 season of The Voice Portugal.
For those who don’t know, The Voice is relatively unique among shows of its kind.
For starters, all of the contestants are required to do “blind auditions.” That means that they come out on stage to a panel of judges who have their backs turned. The contestant performs, and if the judges like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers to turn around.
At that point, each of them competes to get the talented contestant on their team. Throughout the show, singers compete to be the best—and the judges compete with each other to be the best vocal coach.
And when it came to contestant Tiago Nacarato, there was some stiff competition.
As the audition begins, Nacarato begins playing some beautiful Spanish guitar to set up his own performance.
From the very beginning, his guitar chops have everyone on the edge of their seats. His playing is so calming and evocative that the entire room is rapt.
A moment later, Nacarato allows a space in the music and starts to sing. As it turns out, his voice is just as delicate and soothing as the music was—and all of the judges react quickly.
Not a second after they hear his voice, three of the four judges smash their buzzers at the exact same time!
Seeing their reaction, Nacarato can’t help but crack a smile.
All the judges smile so widely seeing Nacarato perform—but there’s still one holdout. Even so, the last judge to turn around is still smiling to himself the whole time. Nacarato’s singing and guitar playing remain as good as ever the whole time.
After just a few more moments, Nacarato finally convinces the final judge to turn four a full four-chair turn! Although Nacarato’s performance never gets overly powerful or complex, it remains confident and soulful the whole time.
When it’s all over, he strikes one last chord—and the audience gives him a huge round of applause!
While this performance originally aired in Portugal, it has since gotten more than 14 million views on YouTube!
Although Nacarato took a bit of a risk by not picking a more powerful or emphatic song, it all still paid off. His quiet confidence had everyone unable to take their eyes off him! As his audition shows, it sometimes pays just to be completely confident in the way you do things.
While a lot of these shows expect people to come out swinging and blow them away, sometimes it’s better to just calm everyone down. And that’s just what Nacarato did.
