Without a doubt, making a living as a musician is a hard life.
Although we all have to be patient and disciplined to get where we want to be in life, the life of an artist or a musician is notoriously unpredictable.
While it definitely takes a ton of talent and a resilient spirit to be truly successful, it also takes a certain amount of social skills and a big chunk of luck as well. Anyone who commits to it must truly love their craft and be dedicated it to it for a lifetime.
Fortunately, there are sometimes success stories that can inspire anyone in that life path to keep going.
The story today is definitely one of the better successes we’ve heard in a while.
The group we’re talking about today is Blac Rabbit, a musical duo composed of twin brothers Amiri and Rahiem Taylor.
They are based out of New York City and are particularly fond of older musical genres—including The Beatles. Like many artists who are trying to make it and get more exposure, Blac Rabbit often took to busking around NYC, including on the subway.
They would post their videos on YouTube, including this one of them performing “Help” by The Beatles:
Over time, Blac Rabbit gained a reputation for themselves… and drew the attention of some bigger industry players.
Eventually, one of their videos was posted by on Instagram by New York Nico, who describes himself as an “unofficial talent scout of New York City.” Needless to say, his account is influential and that exposure gave them a big boost which led to attention from even bigger outlets. As anybody who watches television knows, one of the most involved shows when it comes to internet trends is The Ellen Show.
Needless to say, it didn’t take long for Ellen DeGeneres to give them a call!
After grinding it out and busking on the street for years, Amiri and Rahiem made it on her show!
As they explain in their interview, they started busking about a year and a half before they made it onto her show. They started performing simply because they loved The Beatles so much, and they explained that people were consistently surprised to hear the duo singing it on the subway!
After a kind introduction, DeGeneres clears the way for them to perform one of their songs for her audience.
When it’s all said and done, the duo set up to play The Beatles’ “Eight Days A Week.”
As they start playing, it’s surprising just how much they sound like the original British rock group!
Though it goes without saying, the two have great voices and solid musical chops—but above all, they have the warmest energy and the biggest smiles! Although they definitely didn’t expect their Beatles covers to take them so far, we’re definitely glad they did!
And because Blac Rabbit had lost some of their musical equipment recently, DeGeneres had a surprise for them.
When their performance was over, she surprised them with a whole new set of amps and some new guitars!
Needless to say, the two of them couldn’t be happier. Aside from their great covers, the group also has their own album out and their music is available to stream on Spotify. If you liked this performance, definitely check out their website and all their social media outlets to support them!
Congratulations to Amiri and Rahiem Taylor on their awesome performance! Check out the full thing below:
