Today, when you say dance, you think about TikTok and the many viral songs that they use to come up with different steps that would, later on, become challenges.

Dance steps evolve, and while we are trying to embrace the new style of dancing, there are still some kids who love to dance the shag.

What is Shag dancing and why is it popular?

Shag dance is a type of swing dance that became a hit during the 1930s and 40s. The dance is a combination of nimble footwork and the catchy music of rhythm and blues.

You have probably seen shag dancing in old movies, and you might even remember dancing to the songs that made it more popular.

Last 1984, the Shag dance became the official state dance of South Carolina, and the NSDC was born.

Since then, the NSDC or National SHAG Dance Championships held their annual contest and is now the longest-running shag dance competition here in the United States.

This year, the National SHAG Dance Championship turned 38 years old.

The only year that they missed was last year. It was due to the restrictions due to the rising cases of Covid-19.

YouTube channel Stages Video Productions shared one of the pairs that competed at the March 2022 NSDC. Trinity Davis and Mack West competed and won Junior II Division and were also held as the Overall Champions of this year’s event!

It’s no surprise that Mack West won the shag dance this year. After all, shag dancing runs in their family. Mack’s father, Sam, his mother, Lisa, and his sister, Sydney, had all competed in the prestigious contest.

For the “junior” shag dance category, the dancers should be under 21 years of age.

The duo chose the song “Pony Time” by Chubby Checker, and it was so catchy. If you think the beat is familiar, it’s because Checker also sang the popular song “Let’s Twist Again.”

As expected, Mack’s footwork was superb and flawless. His movements look so light, yet he never missed a beat.

Their dance maneuvers were so complicated that you might feel nervous that they would trip on each other. But since they’re professionals, it looks like they’re dancing in the air.

If you are a fan of these two young masters in Shag dancing, you would know that this wasn’t their first time winning. They’ve been dancing for many years, and each year, they never fail to surprise their audience with new moves.

Last 2017, Trinity and Mack took first place in the Grand National competition for the Junior Shag Category.

After the dance, some of the audience stood up and gave them a standing ovation, and they embraced while smiling.
