Of all the reality competition shows in the world, few are as wide-ranging as The Voice seems to be.
Though we mostly know it from its American version, the show is actually known all around the world and even began in Holland.
For those who haven’t seen it, each episode begins with one contestant appearing before a panel of judges who have their backs turned. As they begin to sing, each of the judges can buzz in to turn around and see who’s performing.
This dynamic is in the show because the competition isn’t as straightforward as other shows.
Unlike something like American Idol, The Voice has the contestants and the judges compete against each other.
While the focus is obviously on the singers, each of the judges gets their own chance to build a winning team and thus win the entire season for being the best vocal coach.
Though it goes without saying, this adds an interesting wrinkle to how the show unfolds. With every performance, there’s a level of increased anticipation for the judges and the audience.
And that was definitely the case in this audition from The Voice of Germany in 2018.
Like any other, it began with a man named Matthias Nebel walking out to perform for the audience.
As the backing music starts playing, Nebel sways back and forth to get excited for his performance.
As it turns out, the song he chose to sing was “Bed of Roses” by Bon Jovi, which is not the most common choice for shows like this one. A moment later, two of the judges immediately recognize it and it brings big smiles to their faces.
If successful performances are partially about picking the right song, he’s definitely off to a good start!
From the very beginning, it’s clear that Nebel has a great rock voice—complete with peaks, valleys and raspiness.
Still, none of the judges have hit their buzzers yet. Still, once Nebel hits the chorus his voice soars. At that, two of the judges hit their buzzers and get out of their chairs to dance around.
A moment later, he hits a note that’s even impossibly higher than any of the others… and the other two judges have to hit their buzzers as well!
Before the end of the song, Nebel has successfully turned every single one of them!
When it’s all over, the judges even call for one last encore—they just want to hear the chorus one more time.
And once again, he nails all of the notes again like it was nothing! Since the clip was uploaded to YouTube, it has earned some 22 million views. After watching him perform, it’s easy to see why!
Although many people on these shows choose pop songs that have notes designed to showcase a technically perfect voice, this performance was something totally different. Instead of doing that, Nebel showed that his voice had both power and soul with a throwback song that nobody was expecting! Even if you’re not a Bon Jovi fan, it’s hard not to respect what Nebel did up there.
