What’s going on

The video description sets us up for the video. It details how strict the Paris lockdown is, with mobility outside of the homes limited to very specific circumstances. Which can be trying in even the most ordinary circumstances, but can be worse for partment living. Just imagine being that close to neighbors that you may not even see because of your respective work schedules.

So members of this apartment community organized a talent show. Participants would get the chance to perform songs, music, and other incredible acts from their balconies. Everyone could remain safely within social distancing orders, while sharing something special. The organizers hoped that this would bring smiles to everyone and help them feel better about the trying circumstances of quarantine.

Ready, set, go

That’s where the video comes in. The camera man is recording a woman, presumably his girlfriend, as she gets ready for a show like none other. She has a warm looking coat on and is studying lyrics or music on her phone while off-camera piano music plays.

Then, shortly into the video, she belts out the first lyrics of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and the results are incredible. She has a soft tone that is both enchanting and alluring and carries the famous lyrics with style. We can imagine her voice drawing in the eyes and ears of every resident of the apartment that Paris evening.

Carry on, carry on

The singer continues, keeping up with the off-screen piano music. You can hear a few applause here and there, but it’s mostly silent. As if everyone is enchanted by her singing and doesn’t want to risk interrupting her.

But what you might miss is how much focus it had to take for her to perform. The cameraman can be heard offering small chuckles, as he basks in the singer’s talent and ability.

A growing audience

When you watch the video, it’s easy to get lost in the singer’s voice. She is undeniably talented and carries Queen’s lyrics with power. We can just imagine time standing still for all the apartment dwellers who were fortunate enough to see the show and those who get to watch this YouTube video. But make sure you look at the other windows.

At some point in the video, you’ll notice multiple lights turning on and the flash and wiggle of cellphone camera lights as they try and capture who’s singing. It’s likely that even with the quarantine lasting as long as it has,, this may be the first time many have seen this talented singer and discovered her incredible vocal range.

Humble gratitude

As the last lyric fades away and the piano music stops, you can see the uncertainty in the singer’s eyes. She did her very best to do justice to Queen and is humble enough to wonder if her neighbors liked it. She leans closer to the balcony’s edge and listens in and we have to wonder if she held her breath.

But then, the cheers and clapping starts. Her neighbors love her voice and talent and are not afraid to show it. They can’t get enough of this talented woman and you can see how overwhelming it is to the woman. Her and the cameraman share a quiet little laugh before the video ends.

A new stage

Quarantine orders makes it difficult to enjoy talented shows in traditional venues. But clever persons, like this Paris community, find inventive ways to make the most of a bad situation. We imagine that this won’t be the last time we hear about incredible balcony shows in the days and months to come.
