It’s not just about winning.

Judges from the hit reality performance show America’s Got Talent always have the front sit on seeing something spectacular. They get to see performances that are amazing and hear the inspiring stories of these competitors firsthand.

In this episode, the four judges were definitely not ready when an all-female team of dancers waltzed into the stage with a fight in their hearts.

Mayya means “the proud walk of a lioness” in Arabic.

It was a fitting name for a group of dancers who hail from Lebanon. The team had previously earned the coveted Golden Buzzer on Arab’s Got Talent Season 6 in 2019.

While they won that competition, Mayya continued to find an avenue to show what they can do. They joined Britain’s Got Talent: Champions in the same year but failed to make it to the final stage of the series.

But for Mayya, joining the competition is more than just about winning.

While the prize is tempting, their performances are aimed to win something much more important. The women said that dancers in Lebanon, especially in recent years, don’t have many opportunities.

While dance and choreography are their passion, there are no safe spaces for them to pursue and express their art.

They joined America’s Got Talent to fight for their right to self-expression.

In their journey, they are joined by Nadim Shierfan. The choreographer said that they decided to join the series after watching the late Jane “Nightbirde” Marczewski, one of the most inspiring contestants to ever grace the show.

Quoting her anthem, Shierfan said, “we can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.”

He also wanted to show the world that the members of their group can “stand on their own feet as really powerful women”.

And as the group performed, the judges realized how unready they were to witness the magic.

The women started their tantalizing performance in a single file line and moved their arms outward in flawless precision. It gave the illusion of a woman dancing with two or so pairs of arms that moved with her every step.

Shierfan shared with ET Canada that the choreography was mixed ideas between Chinese and Lebanese folklore. Their end result was a truly breathtaking performance that will take you through a visual journey.

The judges unanimously praised their performance.

“There are no words to explain to you what we were feeling over here,” Vergara said during the show. “It was the most beautiful creative dancing I’ve ever seen.”

“This really, really will make a difference, full stop, in so many positive ways. That’s one part,” Cowell commented, “And then it was arguably the best dance act we’re likely to have ever seen. And we are honored to have you here.”

And as the judges moved on to a vote, Vergara moved in to say her piece before they press the buzzers.

“I would be so honored to empower you even more in this journey because you deserve it.” She said, “And I want to be a part of this!”

And at that moment, the whole stage lit up in gold and the lionesses have finally won not only the eyes but the hearts of everyone who watched them.
