If you’ve never attempted to play the drums before, you probably think they’re one of the easiest musical instruments to learn.
But don’t be fooled! Drumming takes incredible skill, patience, hand-eye coordination, and endurance.
It takes most people years to become a professional drummer.
But for the rare few, drumming comes naturally from a young age. Five-year-old Justin Wilson II is a fantastic example of how the ability to play a musical instrument really can be in your genes.
By four years old, Justin could already play the Lenny Kravtiz classic “Fly Away on drums.
He’d caught media attention because of his incredible drumming skills – and naturally, like all cute kids with talent, he ended up guest-starring on The Ellen Show.
One year down the line, Justin returned to show off a new song he’d perfected.
It’s clear that Justin loves performing and he’s comfortable chatting to Ellen in front of a live audience. He isn’t shy like most kids his age. Showbusiness is obviously something that comes naturally to him.
He throws in a joke when he tells the audience that this time, he’d be performing Lenny Kravitz hit, “Are You Gonna Go My Way.” Correcting himself with a giggle, he says, “Or you can call it Are You Gonna Go My Wayyyyyyy.” He points to his parents in the audience and says, “That’s what you do!”
It doesn’t end there, either – Justin proves to be hilarious in a totally unintentional little kid way.
He coughs out of the blue (this was pre-COVID, thank goodness), and when Ellen offers him a glass of water, Justin reviews it as “the most disgusting thing he’s ever tasted” with a cheeky grin.
After reassuring Ellen that he’s only joking, it’s time for Justin to switch from mini comedian to mini drummer.
He takes his seat behind the drums and gets started, playing along to the original Lenny Kravitz backing track.
He’s so effortless and at home with his drumming that he doesn’t even need to look at what he’s doing.
You can tell he’s loving his moment in the spotlight, and, watching him play, it’s clear that he’s onto big things in the future.
And then it comes time for Justin’s big surprise.
None other than Lenny Kravitz appears on stage – only one of Justin’s biggest idols. The crowd goes wild for him, but Justin is completely focused on his drumming and doesn’t notice.
It’s only when Lenny comes round to where Justin can see him that the little boy notices who has joined him on stage.
Justin has to do a double-take – but he doesn’t ever stop playing!
Like a true professional, he carries on doing the job he’s been asked to do, right up until Lenny comes behind the drum kit to give him a high five.
Lenny picks Justin up, who’s so excited that he’s gone a little crazy, and carries him over to Ellen.
Even better, he makes Justin’s day by telling him he’s a big fan of the kid’s music. They high five so hard Lenny’s sunglasses fall off.
Of course, Ellen always likes to go the extra mile with her surprises, so she has a second one in store for Justin.
After hearing the little boy is a fan of Spiderman, she’s arranged for him to receive a huge hamper of Spiderman-themed merch!
There’s everything from a backpack to stuffed toys, pillows, games, and much more! Justin can hardly believe his good luck. Wonder what he was most excited about – meeting Lenny Kravitz or the Spiderman merch?
