Carpool karaoke has become a staple of James Corden’s “The Late Late Show.” This segment began all the way back in 2015, just a few weeks after Corden started hosting the show.

While carpool karaoke has evolved into a huge production that typically features A-list celebrities and their friends, in 2015 it was just a small, subdued segment.

The very first person to ever participate in carpool karaoke was Mariah Carey.

Since the segment was brand new, Carey didn’t know what to expect from it. The segment begins with Corden picking Carey up and driving her to work with him. Corden turns on the radio, and in a lucky ‘coincidence,’ it just so happens to be playing one of Carey’s greatest hits.

Carey laughed and said she was onto Corden. At first, she refused to sing.

“I’m not singing today, I was up all night,” Carey said.

Just a few seconds later, she changed her mind and began singing along. Corden sang too, and the pair had a great time rocking out to “Always Be My Baby.”

After that, Carey and Corden did some impressions. Carey did a great impression of Corden—she was able to perfectly capture his British accent. She also did a great Brooklyn accent!

Then, Carey and Corden went back to singing. They both had a fun time singing and dancing to “Fantasy.” Corden, in particular, got very into it!

“New York in the house,” he shouted. “It’s Brooklyn in the house!”

The pair had time for two more songs before they got to the CBS Studios: “Vision of Love” and “Thirsty.” While Carey was hesitant to sing at first, by the end of her time on carpool karaoke she had an amazing time dancing along to her greatest hits!

Corden revealed that before Mariah Carey, no celebrity had said yes to carpool karaoke. But after the celebrities saw how much fun Carey had, many people asked to take part in the segment!

Since 2015, many big-name stars have sung and danced in Corden’s car as he drove around L.A. This includes Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars, Adele, and Ariana Grande.

In December 2016, Mariah Carey went back on carpool karaoke for a special Christmas segment. Naturally, she and Corden sang along to her famous “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

Corden also told revealed that throughout the year, he’d had many of his guests sing along to “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Some of the singers who participated were Elton John, Adele, and Lady Gaga. He played clips of these guests singing and complied the clips into a fun Christmas-themed video!

Carpool karaoke has grown into a huge talk show segment, but back when Carey performed on it, it was still a brand-new idea. If you want to see Carey singing along to some of her greatest hits, check out the video below!
