Music can speak volumes of feelings we wish we could say out loud. There’s a song to every emotion, and we find how perfect the melody and lyrics are.

Some people write songs for their loved ones or make a rendition of them to tell them how they feel instead of saying it outright. Most of the time, a song meant for someone could resonate with others who share the same sentiments.

So last Father’s Day, one country dad thought of singing a classic father-child song with his daughter. Their story had already touched the lives of many, and their rendition of Bobby Bare’s “Daddy, What If.”

Joey + Rory

Joey and Rory Feek have been a husband-and-wife country duo since 2008 but had been working on their individual careers years before that. It was through a friend’s request that the two first sang together in a Can You Duet competition, where they won third place.

Since then, the two took on country music, one album after another. They had a total of eight albums as a duo. Their last album, Hymns That Are Important To Us, was recorded in their hotel room while Joey was undergoing cancer treatment.

Rory After Joey

Joey gave birth to Indiana ‘Indy’ Feek in February 2014 and discovered she had Down Syndrome. A few months after, Joey was diagnosed with cervical cancer and went through a successful operation, only to find out a year after that her cancer relapsed, and this time, it was terminal.

She fought well and hard but succumbed to it in March 2016. Since then, Rory has raised their children – Heidi, Hope, and Indy. Heidi and Hope were Joey’s daughters from her past relationship, but Rory loved and cared for them as his own.

Rory + Indy

Indy was an exceptional child for Joey and Rory since they’ve tagged her along in their shows even when she was still in Joey’s womb. No wonder this little ball of sunshine had the talent like mom and dad.

The bond between father and daughter strengthened through the years, and you can see their love for each other, especially in their recent rendition as their gift to all their fans last Father’s Day.

Papa, What If?

Indy requested that they sing together. He instantly remembered how he loved Bobby Bare’s Daddy, What If and recalled how he would listen to this song on the radio and sing it with his dad.

Rory taught Indy the words to the song by writing the lyrics with some drawings on them and marking the lines that she would sing. They recorded the song in the studio and made a heartwarming music video they shared with everyone.

A Father’s Day Gift

The video was shot on their farm, and it was simply Rory and Indy sitting across each other with the warm, late afternoon sun as their backdrop. Rory played the guitar, and Indy sang along. What a precious moment to witness these two!

They sang the song flawlessly, and you can see how Indy smiled and giggled; that’s how you’d know she was happy to perform with her Daddy. Watch the video below and prepare some tissues; you might cry in the end.
