What’s the most fun you can have in the sack? I know, I know, using the phrase, “Fun in the sack” may bring to mind a slightly different activity…

…But is there a way to have even MORE fun in a sack?

Well, there is another way, one that’s a little bit more…let’s say kid friendly.

“Is it a sack race?” I hear you thinking. Well, for sure, a sack race is a lot of fun, and definitely a lot more PG 13 than…well you know…

But no, a sack race is not what I’m talking about! Here’s a clue: much like a sack race it involves many participants.

If your’e wondering if the answer is a troupe of sack-dancing performers…

…You’d be correct! Introducing Beyer High’s dance production aptly named the “Bag Dance”. And the reason for this name is…you guessed it- The entire crew perform from inside colorful, stretchy fabric bags to some classic dance hits. Bear in mind that these dance hits are more “office party” dance floor fillers than “Swan Lake”!

And this group of dancers truly is mesmerizing!

They turn the human figure into an abstract object, with hands and feet simply becoming corners. When they begin to move it’s a bizarre combination of hilarious and mesmerizing, but I am here for it! And they are not afraid to present some real moves too! Don’t touch this! Hammer slide anyone?

When they do the “hammer slide” in their body bags, the audience can’t help but crack up.

One of the most iconic dance moves of the last century finds new life with this ingenious use of a little bit of fabric, and a whole lot of talent!

Bring on the centipede!

All lined up and in such colorful conga-line style arrangement, you have to admire the vision these young dancers have. I don’t know about you, but I am ready to watch a lineup of pillowcases dance!

And it doesn’t stop with simple lineups, they get creative with their choreography too!

Whoever choreographed this performance made the most of the possibilities afforded by the dancing bags. Lying down and raising their legs apart, new shapes can be made. The choreographer clearly did such a good job not because they understood that they weren’t directing bodies anymore, but shapes. Talk about cutting shapes on the dance-floor!

So when those shapes start jumping, the routine steps up a whole notch!

When the dancers begin dynamically using the space on the stage and diversifying their moves, the full spectrum of possibilities are reached. Watching these abstract shapes spring around the stage, roll up, roll over and jump around is such a fun new approach to a dance.

Well I’m just glad they didn’t collide with one another!

My first question was undoubtedly “can they even see in those things?” Well, evidently they can, because as they run and jump around the stage, they never crash into each other and they all stay in time. Sorry if you were waiting for that to happen!
