In the middle of the show, a 5-year-old student named Sarah gave her very first performance.

In front of an audience at the University of South Florida’s Concert Hall, she sang “Danny Boy” with a choral backup, and let’s just say it was adorable to say that least.

A first performance

Granted, all 5-year-olds are very cute singers.

But if a 5-year-old can happen to hold a tune, it’s a whole different situation. Sarah definitely knows her notes and practiced long and hard for her first solo performance, which the school has posted across all of its social media (even Reddit!).

In it, the kindergartener is backed up by a small group of violinists, violists, and cellists as well as a chorus of her peers.

And if you’ve heard the song, you know it can be tough thanks to some very high notes.

But we’re happy to say little Sarah took them in stride.

“Danny Boy”

“Danny Boy” was actually composed by an Englishman in 1913. His name was Frederic Weatherly and he wrote the lyrics to many other songs, including hymns and war songs.

But it’s largely considered an Irish ballad because it’s set to the melody of the traditional Irish tune “Londonderry Air.” And it’s thought to be a song about a woman sending her son off to war. Nevertheless, it’s been sung on countless occasions, from cheery bars to somber funerals.

A beautiful rendition

The video of Sarah singing the tune has over 100,000 views and many compliments in the comments. She has grace, poise, and confidence throughout, which are clear in the few close-ups we get during the performance.

“The little girl sounds like an angel singing! What a divine experience! God bless!” said one commenter.

Others were equally effusive with their praise.

“It is a heavenly experience listening to this angelic opera soprano in the body of a little girl. The choir is equally superb.”

We even get a cute moment when Sarah flashes a smile at someone in the audience.

Raising funds

It’s definitely a video to be experienced if you love the song.

And at the end, Sarah has another cameo, this time in the form of a request for funds for her new school.

She’s even offered up the money in her own piggy bank (which she says contains “lots”) for the construction.

That’s putting her money where her mouth is. What a sweet child!
